[After taking care of checking in on her two fellow Sailor Senshi, taking at least six lengthy showers to wash out the goop, Rei starts making the rounds, calling people up.
There's a sizable list, but there's one name in particular that stands out. Because she feels it now. The mental connection she'd had to Mabel is gone. And that can only mean one thing...]
Dipper-kun, can you please call me back as soon as you are able? I want to check in on you.
[ dipper listens to the message immediately, but then he...waits awhile to respond. he just wants to be left alone with his notes in his sister-less apartment. but at the same time, he can only put off responding for so long. if rei was worried about him, he didn't really want to aggravate that more than he already had.
his voice is scratchy. ]
Hey - sorry. I was...kinda busy. You know. Catching up on things.
Oh, sure, I do. [ if he sounds a little insincere, it's not because of the food type - really, nothing sounds all that appetizing at the moment, but dipper is too practical to let himself not eat. and he really doesn't want to cook anything. ]
Then I'll be by in...ten minutes? With some sukiyaki, and the proper tea.
[A quick, easy to make thing. Sure it was leftovers from the massive pot she and Ami had made a bit ago but...that wasn't the point. He'd need food, and this was home cooked...
And ten minutes later she's knocking on the door of wherever it was he'd shared with Mabel. And there may have been the beginnings of a bond forming with Dipper too, that helped.]
[ truth be told, he's not...exactly sure what sukiyaki is, buuuuut it won't hurt to try something new, right?
shortly after rei knocks on the door, dipper answers it. he doesn't stop to wonder how she knew where to find him - she'd known mabel. heck, they'd probably had sleepover parties here.
he looks tired, and a little less-than-spirited. but at least he's much cleaner than the last time she saw him? ]
Hey. Uh. [ wow how does he host someone inside an apartment. ] You wanna come in?
Rei on her end looks...tired, and while cheerful is never a word anyone sane would describe Rei as, she appears to be in much, much better spirits than before. She's a lot less sullen seeming, standing up straighter, more lift in her shoulders...and zero dirt anywhere on her.
And under one arm is a large picnic basket.]
If that's alright, yes. I'd like to. But if you're busy or still feeling ill? I can just leave this with you.
[ the smell of home-cooked food does entice him more than he was expecting it to. that's a good thing. the stress of everything wasn't enough to completely overrule his basic needs, thankfully.
he shifts his weight. he wants to be alone. he doesn't need someone to keep him company and look out for him. he could handle this himself. but at the same time, what would mabel think if she knew he had turned away one of her friends who was trying to lend a hand in his time of need?
he knew exactly what she would say. ]
No, it's okay. I've got time. [ he steps aside so she can enter the apartment. ]
[Sensing his reluctance, she hesitates just a little bit...but the invitation removes that lingering doubt. Nodding, Rei steps inside and slips out of her shoes.]
Lead the way to the kitchen. And get plates, if you please. I've made plenty of sukiyaki, and I thought that if you didn't mind, we'd share it. It's traditionally a dish you have with a friend, after travel in some local areas.
I'd say a jungle safari and a trip to a volcano counts, yes?
[ dipper leads the way to the kitchen and pulls out a couple of plates. they definitely look like the sort of thing mabel would pick out, trimmed around the edges with ducklings.
[Once the plates are set out, Rei opens her basket and pulls out a large container that's fogged up with heat and steam. Setting it down quickly in the middle of the table, she peels back the lid and reveals the food. A soup filled with vegetables, tofu, a kind of noodle, and long strips of marinated beef. The smell is strong, a faintly spiced, almost gingery sent wafting throughout the room. And out come a part of soup spoons, which set sets out for the two of them.]
This is sukiyaki. A...well, it's a hot pot. I went ahead and heated it, but normally you're supposed to sit around the table and let it cook in the middle. It's good, fairly simple, and easy to reheat. Something families or groups of co-workers would have, back home.
I hope you like it. I tried to go a little heavier on the meat and noodles, but lighter on the vegetables. My...hah...my girlfriend is something of a fussy eater.
We won't be getting much help from him. Still, I wouldn't bet on clueless.
It's clear that CERES is lying to us about plenty of things. But I'm not sure Mosley-san was involved in anything that happened out there, other than bringing us back. I don't know what his aim is, but I'd like to find out.
[ it smells even better when rei opens the lid of the container, and yeah, dipper can fully admit to himself now that he's hungry and that looks really good. sure beats frozen burritos! ]
So it's sort of a...communal meal sort of thing? [ like pizza. meant to be shared. then it's probably a really good thing he had her come in instead of just dropping it off. two's company, after all.
three's a crowd, but he'd give anything for a certain third person to join them. ]
I don't think he was responsible, either. It didn't sound like he's super passionate about his job, either, but he wasn't about to let anything slip, either. Everything was creepily well-rehearsed, you know? Even the contradictory stuff.
[ which is certainly easier to do in a text message than speaking to someone directly. would he have any tells in person to pick up on? brain-washing is plausible. of course, dipper always think brain-washing is plausible. ]
[Most things are better than frozen burritos. Rei would gladly cook daily if it meant removing those from anyone's menu. She was a big proponent of home cooked food.]
It is, yes. Like I said, for travelers. There are all sorts of stories about it, and how eating it after a journey brings better fortune.
[There aren't, except on New Years, but Rei's a priestess at heart, and her job is to at least attempt to ease burdens.]
And we can all use a bit more of that, I should think.
[Next she takes out a large thermos and two clay mugs, filling one with a steaming brownish liquid and giving him a look. This may come with a complimentary side of Japanese traditional dining...]
As for this? Well, this may not suit you. It's a bitter tea, and a lot of non-Japanese don't care for it. But it's meant to be served with a hotpot like this. Yes or no?
[ After dealing with Katsura's antagonistic paranoia, Dipper's reasoned skepticism is a refreshing change. It's also a reminder of why Yu likes him in the first place.
He also, in an oddly physical way, feels very aware of the knowledge of the implants in his eyes that CERES may or may not have anything to do with. Of the fact that he's talking to Dipper on his CERES issued CereVice. How much precaution is needed when discussing these things, and how much of Katsura's paranoia is actually warranted? ]
Those are the exact same conclusions I came to. Whatever his real position, I don't think he's against us or for us. He's a little flippant, but... mainly, I think he's self-interested.
[ but dipper's thoughts are similar to yu's - he's well aware that this conversation isn't private to just them. and from what mosley had said when dipper asked him about the implants, dipper's current theory is that it is CERES behind them. they still need to address a way around that. they needed to be able to keep secrets. ]
