History: this guy
Personality:

Dipper Pines: mystery hunter, conspiracy theorist, monster slayer, BABBA fan, and twelve-year-old boy. Dipper is the logical, intelligent, and more serious half of the Pines twins, and unlike his sister Mabel, Dipper relies on his mind instead of his heart to guide him. Dipper is highly intelligent and demonstrates an understanding of mathematics and physics far beyond his age - after all, he’s able to calculate precisely a timeline among infinite possibilities in which he won’t hit Wendy in the head with a baseball. He’s also logical and deductive, using clues and a mysterious journal to discover the answers to Gravity Fall’s secrets. Dipper trusts his ability to reason and figure his way out of a situation. However, his brain isn’t all there is to him. Dipper is still just a kid, who cares about his friends and family deeply, trying to do what he thinks is right.

Dipper’s logical disposition sets him up as the ideal mystery hunter in a place like Gravity Falls. Dipper wants all the answers, and when he finds a journal detailing the mysterious phenomena accounted in the town, he doesn’t hesitate to use it to uncover the first mystery he encounters - his sister’s new “boyfriend”. Dipper, with the help of Mabel and others, has solved several of Gravity Falls’ mysteries, including the identity of crazy Old Man McGucket, the truth behind the Society of the Blind Eye, the origin of the Gobblewonker, and many others. However, despite his intelligence and reasoning ability, Dipper isn’t exactly rational. He rationalizes things that to many people, seem crazy, and it takes him a bit far sometimes. When Dipper has convinced himself of something, he has a compulsive need to convince others of it as well. This happens repeatedly throughout the series when Dipper makes mysterious discoveries and tries to get others to see it his way, from the very first episode when he tries to convince Mabel that her boyfriend “Norman” is a zombie. Dipper did turn out to be wrong about this, but his obsession with solving the mysteries of Gravity Falls leads him to wrangle others into believing him, going so far as to conjure up zombies to convince government agents that there’s something strange going on in the town.

While Dipper’s obsession with the journal helps him on numerous occasions with saving himself and his friends from supernatural danger, it also leads him to make some questionable decisions at best. When Dipper is attempting to unlock a laptop that could tell him who the author of the journal is, in his frustration and desperation for an answer he makes a contract with Bill Cipher, a notoriously evil triangle dude who previously broke into Grunkle Stan’s mind. This obviously ends up backfiring on him and Dipper isn’t likely to go out seeking the help of greater demons again, but it demonstrates an increasing trend of suspect behavior on Dipper’s part. On multiple occasions, Dipper uses dangerous magic and technology to help himself, whether it’s making clones of himself so he can spend more time with Wendy, or using a magic crystal to make himself taller than his sister.

Despite the fact that his obsession with Gravity Falls' mysteries has pushed him to make some questionable-at-best decisions, Dipper isn’t without compassion and he cares deeply about the people around him. He’s sensitive and in touch with his emotions. He’s willing to do almost anything for Mabel, and on multiple occasions sacrifices what he wants so she can be happy, such as when he loses his job at the pool so Mabel can free Mermando and when he helps Mabel with her sock opera instead of working out the password to the author’s laptop. Dipper has also formed strong bonds with Grunkle Stan, Soos, and Wendy. Though his relationship with Stan has become strained under the realization of the lies Stan has been telling him and Mabel, that betrayal hurts Dipper deeply because he has come to value his relationship with his great uncle a lot. Dipper and Mabel have come to treat Soos like an older brother, and Dipper has built a strong relationship with Wendy beyond the crush he once had on her. He tends to form strong connections with the people around him, especially with people he can identify with. One of Dipper’s strongest connections is with the author of the journal, a mysterious figure that Dipper has only discovered the identity of very recently (his Grunkle Stan’s long-lost twin brother, of course). His relationship with the author is one of his strongest drives; his relationship with Mabel is the other. These two relationships form a point of tension in Dipper’s behavior between his serious side and his childish side.

Dipper also often falls into playing the role of the hero - sometimes willingly, and sometimes reluctantly. He’s sort of come to accept it as part of his self-appointed duty as the journal’s current keeper, like he owes it to the author to discover the mysteries of Gravity Falls and stop the potential evil and chaos those forces could create. It’s not just the journal, though; Dipper is a good person, and he wants to do the right thing. He wants to protect the people he cares about, he doesn’t want good people to get hurt, and he would do anything for Mabel. Dipper also has a strong sense of justice - and just desserts. When Dipper and Mabel discover that the Northwests were not, in fact, the founders of Gravity Falls, Dipper takes pride in being able to shove that bit of information in Pacifica Northwest’s face. In fact, he remarks that “revenge is underrated. That felt awesome!”

Dipper is paranoid and jumpy, suspicious of just about everyone and everything in Gravity Falls as he takes the journal’s advice to heart - “Trust No One”. In fact, though Dipper’s relationships with Grunkle Stan, Soos, Wendy and even Pacifica are shown to develop deeper, the only person he absolutely trusts is Mabel. Dipper even loses his trust in Grunkle Stan when he and Mabel uncover evidence that Stan is not who he says he is. While Mabel trusts Stan implicitly, Dipper’s doubts and suspicions rob him of his ability to trust his great uncle.

In a lot of ways, Dipper is still just a normal preteen boy. He wants people to take him seriously and treat him like an adult instead of a kid, and he tries to present himself as being older than he actually is. He wants to go to parties with teenagers, impress an older girl, rank high on a manliness test, and roll with the older cool kids. Though he learns the repeated lesson that he should remain true to himself, Dipper still doesn’t like to be perceived as a child. He craves approval from his peers, or from just about anyone, really. Despite the fact that he takes pride in his mystery solving and sharp mind, Dipper doesn’t have the best self-esteem, especially physically. He wants to appear macho and manly, going so far as to train in manliness with a tribe of manotaurs in their "Man Cave".

Dipper has a dry, witty sense of humor, though he’s still susceptible to “kid humor”, too, particularly when he’s around Mabel. Mabel tends to bring out Dipper’s more childlike side, even when he’s reluctant, such as on Summerween. Dipper wants to go to a “cool” party with teenagers, but Mabel wants him to dress up in a matching costume with her, like they always do on Halloween. In many ways, Mabel acts as a foil to Dipper, a sort of checks-and-balances system that keeps him from growing up too fast and becoming too obsessed with the journal. While Dipper tends to be serious and sometimes fatalistic, Mabel tends to be optimistic and cheerful, bringing him back down to earth. And Dipper certainly isn’t all-business, all-journal all the time. He likes to have fun, relax, and joke around with his friends - as long as there isn’t an impending disaster, of course.

Debt: A chance to reverse the the cracked rift in space-time that Bill uses to start the Weirdmageddon.

Inventory: His usual set of clothes, black light

Abilities: Dipper is your standard, run-of-the-mill human being (as far as we know anyway, but this is Gravity Falls), and he does not possess any supernatural powers or abilities. His most notable non-magical ability is his mind. Dipper is incredibly intelligent. He is shown to have a deep understanding of scientific fields such as mathematics and physics, and he also has sharp reasoning and deductive skills.

Oh, and he plays the sousaphone. That's a thing.

Strengths and Weaknesses:
Strengths:
  • Intelligent: Dipper has repeatedly demonstrated impressive intelligence, both through his math and science smarts, and also his deductive reasoning skills and logic. Dipper questions everything, ever expanding his base of knowledge.
  • Eager: Dipper is eager, particularly about learning and getting answers to his questions. He gets extremely excited about the things that interest him, and generally doesn't hold back showing that excitement.
  • Compassionate: Dipper really cares about the people around him, and would do anything for his closest friends and family. He doesn't like letting people down that he feels are counting on him.
  • Brzve: For all his fears, Dipper is incredibly brave and throws himself into mortal peril to save the day on many occasions. For him, bravery isn't just an excuse to fight monsters; its facing his fears and doing whatever it takes to protect his friends and family.

  • Sensitive: Shown to be both a strength and a weakness in Dipper's case, he is sensitive and in-touch with his emotions in a way that helps him connect emotionally with others, but it also can be a hindrance when his hurt feelings cloud his better judgment.

  • Weaknesses:
  • Paranoid: Dipper is suspicious of just about everyone and everything, even some of his closest friends and allies. He's always watching for someone lurking over his shoulder, and it can make him unreasonably fretful and annxious.
  • Untrusting: Dipper has a difficult time trusting people, only exacerbated by the Journal's insistence that he trust no one. He even comes to suspect some of the people closest to him, and Mabel is just about the only person that Dipper trusts unconditionally.
  • Rash: Dipper is prone to make hasty decisions and bad calls when his judgment is impaired. When he's flustered or his emotions have gotten the better of him, his logical side is overruled and he can act like an impetuous kid.
  • Selfish: Despite his best intentions, Dipper can be quite selfish, thinking of how circumstances could benefit himself before considering others' feelings.
