Are you really willing to risk that Dipper? [There's a pause here.] That includes you, too. I'm doing what I can to make sure you're not going to get hit in the backlash that'll come, too.
And you, too. [ Then, he pauses. He didn't want to make a habit of saying he was ready for things he isn't - not after the jungle. But as long as he stayed determined to keep everyone else safe, he could keep himself safe, too.
Right? ] We're in this together, no matter what it brings us in the end.
[His head jerks up suddenly like he hadn't considered that. He knows Dipper's right. He has to think about himself, too. At the same time though...
'I can't lose anyone else.'
He doesn't speak immediately, thinking on that and giving Dipper a blank look before the tiniest of nods follows.] Right. But I'm going to make sure that it's nothing bad. [He'll have to.]
The next step is probably making more pairs of these and settling on a cipher. We need something stronger than what you put on the network. Any ideas?
[ Dipper's happy enough to let that serious topic depart, so he moves on to focusing on the cipher instead. ]
I've been working on it in my head a lot, actually. It combines several ciphers, and it's definitely not going to be easier to learn, but it'll be definitely tough to break.
That's going to help us out a ton. I'm sort of wondering if maybe we shouldn't teach anybody until they have a pair of glasses to read and study it just so CERES doesn't get the chance to try picking it apart. For all we know the implants can take still frames, too, and freeze on pictures we see. That's the last thing we need from them.
That's not a bad idea. [ Keep the knowledge as secure as possible. Very appealing to someone who loves to be paranoid about everything. ] That way CERES will only see things that are already encoded - and that's only if we share information without the glasses. We should do as much information sharing as we can with them on.
[ Man, this is getting complicated, but it's so necessary at the same time. ]
Absolutely. We'll start with just you and me. You can test the second pair of glasses and I'll check out the cipher. When those are ready, we'll start introducing it to our small core of people. Maybe by then we'll have even more answers.
- Speaking of that, we should probably officially compare notes from the ghost attacks. And definitely keep an eye out if anyone starts getting sick again.
Almost everybody I've talked to who was sick last time is almost back to normal if they're not already completely healed. I've updated Baymax's database to keep that on-hand just in case. [But oh yes. The ghosts. SIGH.] ...so what kind of weird stuff happened to you after we split up?
I, uh, helped a couple of people get away from those hallucination ghosts. [ Xion. He helped Xion get away from one. ] But mostly? More of the same. I took down a possessed mattress robot. [ Yup. ] What about you?
I spent a lot of time on that bridge making sure nobody walked off of it, but Leon was heading for the lake when I found him. After that I spent a really, really long time looking for Baymax. A ghost possessed him so I couldn't get through to him on our communication system so it was a lot of chasing him down. [A beat.] Did any of the ghosts actually touch you?
Yeesh. [ He hadn't even thought about Baymax getting possessed, but he was just as likely as any other robot, apparently.
Dipper glances down for a moment, like he's looking for an unseen mark. ] ...Actually, yeah. One of them grabbed me, and I thought I was a goner for sure. But then...nothing really happened. It just left.
I hid behind a dumpster and sent out a mass text telling everybody to come get me because I was too scared to get up and move. Does that sound normal to you?
It did something and I definitely don't like it. It made some of our other friends act really weird, too. Minato basically stopped caring about everything around him, and this girl I know actually almost said she didn't care if Baymax's fist hit her in the face and killed her. [It's an exaggeration, but still.] I need to ask around some more before I can come up with a solid theory.
[ This is alarming - even more alarming that he didn't realize it was happening. ] I'll ask around, too. Let's try to come up with a list of effects and see if there's any consistency about the way people were acting.
[To be fair to Dipper, the only reason Hiro realized it was happening was because of how wrong everything felt.] Good idea. I want to find out everything I can before the next thing happens and we all forget. Obviously I've been kinda busy with the glasses but...it's something we need to do.
[Speaking of the glasses--] I should have your pair done in a week or something now that I know how it works. Why don't you get started asking around the colony and seeing what you can find out about the ghosts?

[ Bragging? Him? Never. ] Sounds like we've got our next steps laid out for us.
